Cortisol Factors
Are you in the Fight or Flight Mode?

There are many factors that can influence the levels of Cortisol in the body; chronic stress being the primary cause. Imagine this; a bear is chasing after you with the look of a big giant Wild Alaskan Salmon in his eyes, are you in fight or flight mode? Guess what, either way you are stessed! Your adrenaline is pumping, and just imagine if you are under any kind of stress, the same thing is happening inside your body just as a traumatic event!

Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced and secreted by the adrenal glands, and is released when the body experiences stressed or agitated states such as physical stress, illness, trauma, extreme temperture changes, or psychological stress. These levels can remain elevated for a prolonged period of time and in fact if exposed to chronic stress there are serious conditions arising from this. Here are a few examples of serious health conditions that can be caused by prolonged elevated stress levels:

  • Memory disturbance
  • Increased appetite and obesity
  • Toxic fat deposited in the belly region
  • Depression
  • Decrease in bone mass which results in increased risk of Osteoporosis
  • Increased risk of Stroke and other Heart related conditions
  • Cancer
  • Accelerated physical aging, i.e. brain, hormone secretions, bones skin and vital bodily organs

When Cortisol is secreted, it causes a breakdown of muscle protein, leading to the release of amino acids into the bloodstream. These amino acids are then used by the liver to synthesize glucose for energy. This process raises the blood sugar level. This can cause a decrease in Insulin Sensitivity.
